Efforts to rebuild Turner Hall, which burned June 19, will get started this week with a "Go Fund Me" Roll Out Party at Western Edge Cellars, 228 West Main Street. The party, sponsored by Fredericksburg-Nimitz Rotary Club, will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19.
Fredericksburg Social Turn Verein members will be there to process new memberships, while Fredericksburg-Nimitz Rotary members will have several computers there for a Facebook "Go Fund Me" drive kick-off. Turn Verein secretary Martha Durst will be hosting the "Go Fund Me" page on Facebook.
" 'Go Fund Me' crowdfunding works through one's social media network and can reach interested people who have moved, who are members of Rotary or Turn Vereins in other cities or states, or firemen who want to honor the site of Fredericksburg's first fire brigade", said Turn Verein president Duane Durst.
Turner Hall, a center for social gatherings such as weddings, dances, reunions and proms since 1909, brings back memories for many people. If anyone would like to share photographs or stories, there also will be a sign-up list for phone contact numbers. Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post Editor Ken Esten Cooke, Dawn Donalson, Phil Houseal, Penny McBride and others are working on restoring the history of Turner Hall. Many of the photographs were destroyed in the fire. Please contact Donalson at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have memorabilia.
If anyone would prefer a more traditional method of fundraising, there is a Fredericksburg Social Turn Verein Special Account at Security State Bank and Trust at P.O. Box 471. In person donations at the bank also are welcome.
The local Rotary clubs also will be working with the Turn Verein to produce "Rebuild Turner Hall", a benefit at Marktplatz Sunday, Sept. 25 from noon to 6 p.m. Many well-loved bands will be there, including Sammy Geistweidt and the Wagon Aces. There will be a few surprise guests, as well. Special thanks go to the City of Fredericksburg for the use of Marktplatz.
Turner Hall fundraising efforts will be monitored by local banker Brad Hardin. Hardin has ties to the Turn Verein, the hospital and many other local committees.
