Red Cross preps Hill Country for ‘Harvey’ evacuees
The American Red Cross Hill Country Chapter is gearing up for a large influx of Hurricane Harvey evacuees, according to Jacques Dubose, chapter executive director.
The office, based in Kerrville, is putting out a call for “event-based volunteers,” who will be quickly shuttled through a background check and entered into the organization’s system before being assigned to a location.
“Right now, we need new volunteers,” Dubose said. “We have lists that serve as Red Cross shelters and we will be updating that as the storm approaches.”
Dubose said persons may call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767) to register as a volunteer or donate, or they may do so online at www.redcross.org, where they can enter their zip code and find out where to assist in person.
A list of shelter locations will be updated on the organization’s Facebook page.
Dubose said those wishing to donate money may do so online or by dropping off or mailing checks to their Hill Country Office, 333 Earl Garrett Street, Kerrville, TX 78028.
“We’ll likely be running 24/7 through the weekend, so the coffee pot will be on and we welcome volunteers and donations,” Dubose said.
Dubose said at this point in the process, the organization can’t handle a lot of donations such as clothing, so monetary donations are welcomed to help evacuees with basics and medicinal needs, he said.
