Plane crash claims two lives

Plane enthusiast, FES student perish in Stonewall-area accident

An airplane crash on Sunday evening near Stonewall claimed the lives of two Gillespie County residents.

Shane Lee Buck, 39, of Fredericksburg, was operating his Rans Coyote II aircraft with a nine-year-old female passenger, Addyson Grace Staats.

The young passenger was the daughter of Tracy Hogan Staats and Phillip James Staats. She was a fourth-grader at Fredericksburg Elementary School.

Buck was a native of Midland and an aviation enthusiast. He worked as a supervisor in the oil and gas industry.

An eyewitness at the crash said the plane seemed to have a mechanical malfunction. The plane crashed in a field behind the residence of Floyd Burg, about one mile south of the U.S. 290-Ranch Road 1623 intersection.

The Federal Aviation Administration took over the investigation from the Texas Department of Public Safety, which also was investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. A cause had not been determined by press time.

The aircraft is a single-engine, two-seat, lightweight monoplane considered a sport craft. Buck leased a hangar at the nearby Burg Lake Aero.

Information will be updated as it becomes available. Obituaries may be found on page D5.
