The Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post earned a top-three spot in the Texas Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest at the TPA Newspaper Leadership Retreat on June 21-23 at La Toretta Lake Resort and Spa in Montgomery.

The Standard-Radio Post scored a total of 300 points to finish third in Division 6, behind sweepstakes winners Port Aransas South Jetty and second place Burnet Bulletin.

The newspaper placed in the following categories: Column Writing, second place; Sports Photo, second place; Feature Photo, third place; Editorial, third place; and Advertising, third place.

Placings and judges’ comments included:

Advertising — “Imaginative, clever copy writing. Good design, too.”

Column Writing — “Both were well written and thoughtful, and definitely appeal to a wide audience.”

Editorial — “Enjoyed the directness — even though written to the masses through the paper, there is no question who these are directed toward.”

Feature Photo — “The tractor, flags and astronomy photos are most interesting. I like the juxtaposition of light and dark in the astronomy one. Two of the photos were not as visually interesting; the other three were great.”

Sports Photo — “Nice captures here! The girl blowing a bubble while competing in track is a unique photo — good eye! Great work capturing the baseball with the pitcher. Overall nice photos!”
