Entertainers, horses line up for county fair

130th celebration scheduled Aug. 23-26 at Gillespie County Fair Grounds

Final plans and preparations are being made for the 130th Gillespie County Fair that takes place Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 23-26, at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds.

Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the 130th Gillespie County Fair will include two days of live pari-mutuel horse racing, a carnival and midway, displays of agricultural and home products, a parade, a queen’s contest, antique machinery displays, musical entertainment, livestock shows, mutton busting and more.

The 130th Gillespie County Fair opens on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 5 p.m. with free admission to the grounds.

Entertainment on Thursday night will feature Dale Watson and The Peterson Brothers.

There is no charge for the entertainment, which is sponsored by the Ranch Radio Group.

There is a charge for the carnival and midway, which also opens Thursday and continues throughout the weekend.

Earlier on Thursday, entries will be taken in the agriculture and home skills departments from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Judging gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

The Gillespie County Fair Parade will make its way along Main Street, Friday morning, Aug. 24, starting at 10 a.m.

After the parade, events shift back to the fair grounds site where the gates open at 1 p.m.

The 2019 Gillespie County Fair Queen and her court will be crowned during ceremonies planned Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m.

Catalog dedications will also be made that night. The 130th Gillespie County Fair is dedicated to honorary lifetime director Leon (Butch) Welgehausen.

Also honored will be long-time volunteers Harvey Ellebracht and Clifford and Lynette Kuhlmann.

A concert and dance, featuring the music of Jake Hooker and The Outsiders begins at 8 p.m. on Aug. 24 on the outdoor dance pavilion.

A “42” tournament will be held on Friday.

Registration opens at 4 p.m. and the tournament starts at 4:30 p.m. and will continue for about two hours.

There is no entry fee, and prizes will be awarded.

Washer pitching is slated for Saturday morning with sign-up starting at 10 a.m. and pitching at 11 a.m. Cost is $40 per team.

Mutton busting for youngsters will be offered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Registration will begin around 5:30 p.m. and the event starts around 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and about 30 minutes after the last race on Saturday.

There is a $20 entry fee, and trophies will be presented to the first and second-place finishers each night.

Goat roping will take place after the final race on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Live pari-mutuel horse racing will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25-26, with post time at 1 p.m., both days.

Highlighting the entertainment Saturday night, Aug. 25, will be special guest star Steve Wariner at 9 p.m. followed by Cory Morrow at 10:30 p.m.

The 2018 racing season at the Class III facility at the fair grounds concludes on Sunday.

Highlighting the racing program on the final day of the season will be the running of the 2018 Gillespie County Fair Futurity.

The Hill Country Antique Tractor and Engine Club will be offering demonstrations and displays during the fair.

Throughout the weekend, the Exhibition Hall will be open for those interested in viewing the agricultural and home products displays, educational exhibits and more.

Over in the Show Barn, livestock judging will take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24-25.

Plenty of food and drink will be available throughout the weekend.
