Commissioners Court to mull tax rise of .8 cent

Gillespie County Commissioners announced a proposal for a slight tax rate increase.

Commissioners will discuss this approval during a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Gillespie County Courthouse.

Gillespie County Judge Mark Stroeher stated that they wish to increase the tax rate as follows:

• $0.3795 per $100 valuation for maintenance and operations;

• $0.0286 per $100 valuation for interest and sinking (debt);

The increase totals $0.4081 per $100 for the proposed tax year of 2018.

The tax rate for the tax year of 2017 was a total of $0.3999, making an increase of $0.0082, or less than a penny, according to Stroeher.

In addition, commissioners held a special meeting Wednesday morning to consider the approval of closing Keese Road at Crabapple Creek for repairs, take appropriate action to re-consider action taken regarding travel expenses for a former sheriff during the Aug. 27 meeting and consider approving the Routine Airport Maintenance Program grant agreement with TxDOT for the 2019 fiscal year.

The county plans to hold the following public hearings:

• Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5:15 p.m. — budget hearing;

• Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5:20 p.m. or upon conclusion of the budget hearing — second tax rate hearing.

The public is welcome at both meetings.
