Wreath-laying ceremony will honor founders

In celebration of the founding of Fredericksburg a Commemoration and Wreath-Laying ceremony in honor of John O. Meusebach will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, on Marktplatz.

Glen Treibs will be the speaker for the ceremony.

Fredericksburg was founded on May 8, 1846, and in honor of Founders Day, a tour of the Pioneer Museum will be free to all visitors on Wednesday, May 8.

Meusebach was a German nobleman who was sent to Texas by the Adelsverein, the sponsors of immigration to Texas in the 1840s.

Only 35 years old when he arrived, Meusebach is credited with leading the pioneers to establish permanence here, including negotiating a lasting peace treaty with the Comanches.

His bust is prominent in front of the Vereins Kirche, and a bronze statue of the peace pipe ceremony with Comanche Chief Buffalo Hump is in the memorial garden behind the Vereins Kirche.
