Youth program brings pool parties, field trips and fun
For 24 years, the Fredericksburg Police Department has hosted the Law Enforcement Summer Youth Program for children ages 7-14.
The program consists of Tuesday afternoon activities throughout the summer months. Typically, the program starts around 1 p.m. and concludes by 4:30 p.m.
All events are free of charge and open to kids in Gillespie County.
Special Services Lieutenant Braxton Roemer said it not only provides kids with something to do, but gives them an opportunity to do something they might not otherwise.
“We want them to try different things and do something new,” he said.
While the aim is to give kids something to do during the summer months, it also helps kids connect with officers and law enforcement officials.
“We also want to make kids comfortable with talking to us when they see us in the community,” Roemer said.
The group plans activities like a pool day at the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park pool, movie days at Fritztown Cinema and a presentation from the local game warden.
New this year, was a special presentation at the Pacific Combat Zone at the National Museum of the Pacific War.
In the program’s 24 years of existence, it averages between 100-150 kids a week and teams up with Hill Country Memorial’s summer Fit Kids program. Most activities are advertised on the Fredericksburg Police Department Facebook page and on the City of Fredericksburg’s website.
The activities are free for kids to attend and the city covers the cost of the use of the pool and park pavilions.
“These activities are free and incorporated into our annual budget,” Roemer said. “We want to give back to the community that helps support us.”
