Mary Cornett, of Fredericksburg, was one of 35 who took to Gillespie County’s skies on Saturday for Airport Day at the Gillespie County Airport. Five pilots took young kids up into the sky in seven different airplanes, including Piper Cubs, Gyrocopters, a Piper Cherokee and two Boeing-Stearman biplanes.
Gillespie County Airport Day participant Lily Bonser learns what it takes to fly an airplane Saturday at the Gillespie County Airport. Bonser learned how to use the Redbird Flight Simulator which is used to train new pilots and help existing pilots keep their training and hours up to date.
Over 250 people, including pilot Dave Gasmire, left and Ryan Davis, attended Airport Day, according to an event spokesman. The remote-control airplane organization, a classic car group, and the Willow City Volunteer Fire Department also participated in the event geared toward educating young children about airplanes.
