Floating fitness classes to return
A new round of “floating fitness” group personal training classes will be offered in January by Hill Country Memorial Hospital.
In these classes, participants exercise on top of rigid, buoyant mats in the HCM Wellness Center’s indoor pool.
“Being on the water means that you are constantly engaging your muscles to balance on the mat,” said instructor Diane Patteson. “So the effects of simple strength, flexibility and balance exercises are multiplied.”
Exercising on the floating mats, called “BOGA Fitmats,” minimizes the impact that traditional land exercises can have on the body’s joints. With each movement, the water absorbs much of the force so that muscles get a vigorous, low-impact workout, according to Patteson.
For beginners, the HCM Wellness Center has added the “Building a BOGA Base” class that starts on the ground and transitions to a mat on the water.
An intermediate “Balance Basics Plus” class has also been added.
Each class is taught weekly for four weeks, and each four-week session costs $40.
The “Building a BOGA Base” class will be held each Friday from Jan. 5-26 from 10:45-11:30 a.m.
The second session runs Feb. 2-23.
The “Balance Basics” class will be held each Thursday from Jan. 4-25 from 5:45-6:30 p.m.
The second session runs Feb. 1-22. The class will focus on strengthening the core muscles to improve balance.
An intermediate “Balance Basics Plus” class will be held each Monday from Jan. 8-29 from 12:30-1:15 p.m. The second session runs Feb. 5-26.
A second “Balance Basics Plus” class will be held each Wednesday from Jan. 10-31 from 12:30-1:15 p.m. The second session runs Feb. 7-28.
