Leaving our mark, but in a bad way

The convenience of plastics, a derivative of oil, makes our lives easier now. But as Monday was Earth Day, we point out some simple, plastic household items that will be around for generations.

The Farmers’ Almanac publication had a sobering reminder that our addiction to single-use plastic items will be felt on the earth for eons. Our grandchildren’s grandchildren’s grandchildren may find our drinking straws.

Here are decomposition times for marine environments:

450 years – Plastic bottles for water and sodas;

450 years – Disposable diapers;

50 to 500 years – Styrofoam cups;

400 years – 6-pack rings;

100-1,000 years – Plastic cutlery;

Never – Mylar balloons.
