Treat yourself to luxury
With a passion for helping people with taking care of their skin, Jennifer Atkins Marshall opened Prickly Pear Spa to solve frustrating issues.
“I grew up with terrible skin and I never knew the right thing to put on my face. So, I want to help people do that through all stages of life,” Marshall said.
Marshall became a licensed esthetician in 2007 and has worked at different spas in Fredericksburg. In 2013, she made the move to open and run her own business.
When the new office complex on Trailmoor Street was in the planning stages, Marshall jumped on the opportunity to own, design and practice beauty and skin care. The spa officially opened in February 2018.
The name Prickly Pear was chosen by Marshall’s daughter, Alaina.
“We didn’t want something cliché, so I asked her what her favorite product was and she said Prickly Pear because it’s really hydrating and rejuvenating,” Alaina said. “It also is something that is found in the Hill Country.”
Prickly Pear Spa currently offers a variety of services from massages to facials to skin treatments.
Massages are designed for singles or for couples and last between 60 and 90 minutes.
“I went around to local bed and breakfasts and asked what their customers were looking for from a spa and the number one response was couple’s massages,” Marshall said.
Therapists use either gentle or firm techniques based on the client’s preference.
Facials are also a part of the spa menu. Facials are tailored for calming and healing, brightening, for men and for teens.
“I have had a lot of athletes come to get their faces treated because they are breaking out and I want to do what I can to get their skin taken care of,” Marshall said.
Relax to the max
Marshall and her employees look to create a relaxing and comforting environment.
“We are a more boutique-spa over a large commercial spa,” Marshall said. “We want things to be private so we space appointments far apart and allow people to get their treatments and then relax.”
Having a smaller spa with fewer people, makes the spa intimate.
“This gives our clients more time with their significant other to talk and relax without being in a room with other people,” she said.
Marshall also hopes that moms especially take advantage to pamper themselves.
“I hope all the parents come here to relax. It’s our goal to make them feel luxuriously pampered so when they go back, they are better parents,” she said.
