Joaquin Munoz


JOAQUIN MUNOZ

Joaquin Munoz, 73, of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014.

A funeral mass was celebrated Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the organist, and Donna Durst, the vocalist.

Private distribution of the cremains is planned at a later date.

Visitation and a vigil service were held Friday evening, Sept. 5, in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Munoz was born March 6, 1941, in Kendall County, the son of Martin Munoz and Beatrice Ramirez Munoz. He married Manuela Sanchez-Malcara on Sept. 25, 2004, in Kerrville, and she survives.

In addition to his wife, Munoz is survived by two sons, one daughter and spouses, including Fernando and Dianne Munoz and Thomas and Casey Munoz, all of Fredericksburg, and Dolores Rodriquez of Kerrville; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Lorene Maurer Pfiester

Lorene Maurer Pfiester, 86, of San Antonio, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, 6907 Kitchener St., San Antonio.

A rosary service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., just before the mass.

Interment will be in Fredericksburg at a future date.

Mrs. Pfiester was born June 29, 1928, in the Stonewall-Hye area, the daughter of Adolph Maurer and Delka Nebgen Maurer. She spent most of her life in San Antonio. She married Charles (Charlie) Pfiester nearly 65 years ago and he survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Pfiester is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, including Mike and Zelpha Pfiester of Austin; Rod and Nan Pfiester, Kyle; Charlie and Diana Pfiester Jr., San Antonio, and Jeff and Debbie Pfiester, Houston.

William Gary Rankin

William Gary Rankin, 80, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, in San Antonio.

A memorial service will be held at Unity Fellowship Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Sept. 20.

Rankin was born in New York City, the son of Edward and Edna Rankin. He was a retired Navy veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Felecia Rankin; a son, Clifford Rankin, and one grandson.

Matthew Taylor Schafer


MATTHEW TAYLOR SCHAEFER

Matthew Taylor Schafer, 28, of Abilene, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, as the result of injuries received in an airplane crash in which his brother, Richard W. Schafer III, also died.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene with Jack Hardcastle officiating.

Graveside services with military honors and interment were held Saturday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Fredericksburg.

Schafer was born Sept. 12, 1985, in Austin, the son of Richard W. (Rick) Schafer Jr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Beth) White Schafer. He married Victoria Komorowski on April 3, 2010, in Fredericksburg, and she survives.

A 2004 graduate of Fredericksburg High School, Schafer was a United States Air Force veteran, serving for nine years. During his time in the Air Force, he was in the 7th AMXS Squadron and the 7th Civil Engineer Squadron. He was deployed three times, twice in the Middle East and once in Haiti.

Mrs. Clayton Stehling


MRS. CLAYTON STEHLING

Mrs. Clayton Stehling, 80, nee Josephine (Josie) Burrer of Fredericksburg and formerly of Harper, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at Knopp Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral mass was celebrated Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist, and Lorna Weiershausen and Nancy Maenius, the vocalists.

Entombment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a vigil service were held Wednesday evening, Sept. 3.

Mrs. Stehling was born June 22, 1934, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Edwin Burrer and Olga Jung Burrer. She married Clayton Stehling on July 5, 1952, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Wilton C. Sturdivant Jr.

Mrs. Wilton C. Sturdivant Jr., 93, nee Betty Jane Shoupe of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with interment following at Der Stadt Friedhof.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Edgar L. Usener Sr.


MRS. EDGAR L. USENER SR.

Mrs. Edgar L. Usener Sr., 93, nee Telka Leyendecker of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. David Priem officiating.

Interment followed in Der Stadt Friedhof.

Visitation was held Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Usener was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Albert Leyendecker and Dina Knopp Leyendecker. She married Edgar Ludwig Usener on Nov. 16, 1938, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1994.

She is survived by a son, Edgar (Tiny) Usener Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Harper; a daughter, Betty Sagebiel, and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Usener, both of Fredericksburg.

Survivors also include six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Elaine Rosalie Kuhlmann Weed

Elaine Rosalie Kuhlmann Weed, 72, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

No formal services are planned.

Private disposition of the cremains will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Greater Life Christian Center or to the charity of choice.

Jewell Faye Weirich


JEWELL FAYE WEIRICH

Jewell Faye Weirich, 74, nee Welgehausen, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Reverends Casey Zesch and Travis Meier officiating.

Private graveside services and interment were held in Johnson City.

Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home where visitation was held Wednesday evening, Sept. 3.

Ms. Weirich was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Fredericksburg, the daughter of Alvin Welgehausen and Cora Sagebiel Welgehausen. She married Buster Weirich who preceded her in death.

Prior to moving back to Fredericksburg upon retirement, she owned and operated Jewell’s Flower Shop in Johnson City

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Cody and Kristy Weirich of Bridgeport; a daughter, Candice Weirich of Fredericksburg, and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 4-6 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 7-10 a.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m., in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with interment following at Der Stadt Friedhof.
