Funeral service announcements

Information on funerals that occur after June 17 will appear under this heading.

WARD E. SMITH

Ward E. Smith, 86, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, June 19, 2015, at Hilltop Village Nursing and Rehab Center in Kerrville.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 25, in the chapel at Schaetter Funeral Home.

Private interment of the cremains is planned at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

 

IDA HONIG RODE

Ida Honig Rode, 92, of Harper, died Saturday, June 20, 2015.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home where visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, June 22.

Visitation will continue on Tuesday, June 23, from 9-10 a.m., at St. James Lutheran Church in Harper where funeral services will begin at 10 a.m.

Interment follows in the Harper Community Cemetery.

Gary Dean Boerner

Gary Dean Boerner, 65, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, June 7, 2015, in a Houston hospital.

Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, in the Comfort Cemetery in Comfort.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home of Fredericksburg.

Boerner was born Jan. 8, 1950, in Fredericksburg, the son of Charles Boerner Jr. and Ruth I. Schmidt Boerner.

He is survived by five brothers and two sisters, including Charles (Chuck) Boerner III and his wife, Becky; Gretchen Goertz and her husband, Samuel; Carl Boerner and his husband, Carlos; John D. Boerner and his wife, Debbie; James W. Boerner and his wife, Glenna; Mary E. Spencer and her husband, Chad, and Mark E. Boerner and his wife, Diane.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice Mae Grobe

Alice Mae Grobe, 74, nee Mueller, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, June 13, 2015.

A memorial visitation will be held from 1-4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 20, in the chapel at Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Werner W. Klein

Mrs. Werner W. Klein, 89, nee Esther Koennecke of Fredericksburg, died Friday, June 12, 2015.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with interment following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, Hill Country Memorial Hospital or to the charity of choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Mrs. James C. Klein


MRS. JAMES C. KLEIN

Mrs. James C. Klein, 100, nee Meta Mary Roeder, of San Antonio and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Monday, June 8, 2015.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist, and Annette Whittington, the vocalist.

Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

A vigil service was held Wednesday evening in the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Klein was born March 11, 1915, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Charles Roeder and Hilda Jenke Roeder. She married James C. Klein on April 3, 1937, in San Antonio. He preceded her in death.

Kenneth L. Reissig


KENNETH L. REISSIG

Kenneth L. Reissig, 81, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, May 28, 2015.

He was a victim of the Memorial Day weekend flooding in Blanco County. His body was recovered the following week.

Graveside services and interment of the cremains was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Reissig was born March 14, 1934, in Victoria, the son of Francis Reissig and Blanche Dusek Reissig.

Reissig is survived by the following children and spouses: Joyce Kaiser of Indian Trail, North Carolina; Terri and Marc Philemon, York, South Carolina; Cindy and Charlie Barfield, Hickory, North Carolina; Tim and Amanda Reissig, Concord, North Carolina; David and Joyce Moseley, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Mary Alice Aguilar, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Mark and Toni Moseley of Buda.

Thomas Edward (Scottie) Schkade


THOMAS EDWARD (SCOTTIE) SCHKADE

Thomas Edward (Scottie) Schkade, 78, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, June 7, 2015.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 11, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church with the Reverends Alan Williams and Clint Pluenneke officiating.

Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home where visitation was held Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Schkade was born July 4, 1936, in Port Arthur, the son of Henry Schkade and Henrietta Leschber Schkade. He married Faye Jackson Lee on Feb. 26, 1973, in Port Arthur, and she survives.

In addition to his wife, Schkade is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Stephen Roberts of Port Arthur, and Elizabeth and Eric Klaehn of Fredericksburg, and two granddaughters.

Deborah Scullin

Deborah Scullin, 59, died Thursday, April 23, 2015.

A rosary service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 20, at the Marienkirche (Old St. Mary’s), followed by a memorial Mass at 10 a.m.

Ms. Scullin died April 23, 2015, at the age of 59 years.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Martin Hugo Baethge

Martin Hugo Baethge, 83, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, June 1, 2015.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 4, in the chapel of Fredericksburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Williams officiating.

Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation was held Wednesday evening at the funeral chapel.

Baethge was born April 4, 1932, in Harper, the son of Hugo Baethge and Ella Saenger Baethge. He married Mary Jane Sultemeier on Feb. 14, 1954, in Fredericksburg. She preceded him in death.

Baethge served in the United States Army and later worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and welder for City Public Service in San Antonio.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darryl and Cherryl Baethge and DeWayne and Melissa Baethge, all of Seguin; one step-daughter, Jeanine Peckme of Boerne, and one step-son, Steven Kirchoff of Waco.

Survivors also include five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John Edgar Bynum


JOHN EDGAR BYNUM

John Edgar Bynum, 80, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, May 11, 2015.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Weaver officiating.

Visitation was held beforehand.

Private disposition of the cremains is planned at a later date.

Bynum was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Mason, the son of George Edgar Bynum and Marie Odessa Solomon Bynum. He married Evelyn Norman on July 8, 1978, in San Antonio, and she survives.

Bynum was a United States Army veteran, serving from May 21, 1957, to Aug. 6, 1962.

He worked in the maintenance department of the Fredericksburg Independent School District.

In addition to his wife, Bynum is survived by two daughters, two sons and spouses, including Reba J. Lynn and Kenneth D. Bynum, both of Fredericksburg; Patricia and Cecil Carlisle of La Vernia, and Thomas and Tabitha Bynum of McAllen.
