James Jay (Jim) Miller


JAMES JAY 'JIM' MILLER

James Jay (Jim) Miller, 73, of San Antonio and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014.

A funeral mass was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fredericksburg with Bishop Michael Pfeiffer officiating.

Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist and Tricia Eilers, the vocalist.

Graveside services and interment followed on Monday, Jan. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in San Antonio.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and vigil/rosary services were held Friday evening, Jan. 2.

Miller was born March 25, 1941, in Fredericksburg, the son of Warren Frederick Miller and Elenora Klein Miller. He married Mary Nell St. John who preceded him in death. On June 24, 2000, he married Cheryl Plumb, in Fort Worth, and she survives.

Mrs. Frank A. Schmidt Sr.


MRS. FRANK A. SCHMIDT SR.

Mrs. Frank A. Schmidt Sr., 102, nee Marie H. Moritz of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014.

A funeral mass was celebrated Monday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist and Tricia Eilers, the vocalist.

Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a vigil service were held Sunday evening, Dec. 28.

Mrs. Schmidt was born July 27, 1912, at Hye, Blanco County, the daughter of Joseph Moritz and Amalia Baumann Moritz. She married Frank A. Schmidt Sr. on Aug. 9, 1930, at St. Mary’s. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1998.

She is survived by two daughters, including Juanita Marie Wehmeyer and her husband, Robert E., of Fort Worth, and Betty Ann Heineman, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a daughter-in-law, Frances, Mrs. Frank J. Schmidt Jr.

Elizabeth (Betty) Adrianna Lugthart Tanner


ELIZABETH 'BETTY' TANNER

Elizabeth (Betty) Adrianna Lugthart Tanner, 97, of Ashland, Ohio, and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Dec. 25, 2014 at Hospice of North Central Ohio.

A memorial service in Ohio is planned at a later date under the direction of Wappner Funeral Directors of Ashland, Ohio.

Mrs. Tanner was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Akron Ohio, the daughter of Dennis Daniel Lugthart and Golda Enlow Lugthart.

Mrs. Tanner moved to Weslaco, Texas, in the 1940’s where she became a New York Life Insurance saleswoman. She later became a real estate broker in the Rio Grande Valley and was a Certified Master Broker (CMB).

She moved to Fredericksburg in the early 1990’s and she continued to sell real estate and was also active with Meals on Wheels and hospice.

She returned to Ohio in early 2011.

She was a lifetime member of the Unity of the Valley Christian Church in Pharr, Texas.

Mrs. Jim (Alice) Traggis, 92, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

Arrangements are pending with Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Rubie Lynn (Tookie) Berggren

Rubie Lynn (Tookie) Berggren, 84, nee Jahns, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Casey Zesch officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Mrs. Berggren was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Seguin, the daughter of Robert A. Jahns and Erna Adams Jahns. She married Will Rogers Berggren in Hobbs, New Mexico on March 20, 1984. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2014.

She is survived by four children, including David Whiting and his wife, Connie, of Fredericksburg; Russ Whiting and Karla Hackman of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Robin Montgomery and her husband, Mark, of Richardson; and Brian Whiting and his wife, Cyndi, of Montenegro.

Survivors also include eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Leola Jahns and Lee and Beth Jahns, all of Seguin.

Arthur Carman Bonner, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, at First Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Linda McPhaul Davis, 74, of Austin and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2014.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2, at Austin Oaks Church in Austin.

Arrangements are under the direction of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, Austin.

Roy Henry Gipson

Roy Henry Gipson, 86, of Johnson City, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, in Fredericksburg.

Funeral services are being held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m., at Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Johnson City, with interment following at Der Stadt Friedhof in Fredericksburg.

Frank Habecker Sr.


FRANK HABECKER SR.

Frank Habecker Sr., 78, of Mason, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2014.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason with the Rev. Tim Scheffel officiating. Dreu Bearden was the organist.

Interment followed at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery at Doss.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mason Funeral Home where visitation was held Sunday evening, Dec. 21.

Habecker was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Kerrville, the son of Emil Habecker Sr. and Viola Seiter Habecker. His first wife, the former Jeannie Freeman, preceded him in death. He married Helen Meyer Schmidt in 2008 and she survives.

At age 19, Habecker went to work for the Texas Highway Department.  He then started his own business doing site work and road construction.  He also built construction pads and sold red granite road material.

He was also a private pilot, a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason, and a Scoutmaster.

Albert Hallford

Albert Hallford, 81, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014.

Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton.

A celebration of his life will be held locally at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Hallford was born Sept. 5, 1933, in Fort Stockton, the son of Currie Hallford and Annie Webb Hallford. He married Margaret McKinney in 1962, and she survives.

A U.S. Army veteran, Hallford served from 1954-56.

He received a master of education degree from Sul Ross University in Alpine, and for 40 years, was a teacher/principal in Balmorhea and Alpine.

He had also served as an Alpine municipal judge and was a cattle rancher.

In addition to his wife, Hallford is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Scott Stone of Ridgefield, Connecticut and Denise and Chris Looney of New Braunfels.
