Mario Rios Perez

Mario Rios Perez, 71, of Cedar Creek and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Fredericksburg Nursing and Rehab.

A funeral mass was celebrated Friday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stonewall with the Rev. Scott Janysek officiating.

Interment followed at Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Stonewall.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a vigil service were held Thursday evening, Jan. 29.

Perez was born April 15, 1943, in Junction, the son of Rudolpho Perez and Andrea Rios Perez.

Rebecca (Becky) Terry

Rebecca (Becky) Terry, 63, nee Beckmann, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., today, Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Interment followed in the Loyal Valley Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Loyal Valley Cemetery Fund or to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Pedro Vela Sr.


MRS. PEDRO VELA SR.

Mrs. Pedro Vela Sr., 71, nee Maria Enriqueta Meneses of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

A funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Scott Janysek officiating.

Interment followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a rosary service, led by Deacon Francisco de la Torre, were held on Monday evening, Feb. 2.

Mrs. Vela was born Oct. 24, 1943, in Allende, Mexico, the daughter of Esteban Meneses and Maria Martinez Meneses. She married Pedro Vela Sr. on Dec. 19, 1964, in Mexico and he survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Vela is survived by five sons and spouses, including Antulio and Mary Helen Vela, Martin and Lucia Vela, Pedro Vela Jr., Alfredo and Maria Guadalupe Vela and Bert and Toni Vela, all of Fredericksburg.

Mrs. David Zamora

Mrs. David Zamora, 83, nee Maria Gonzalez of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

A funeral mass was celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund or to the charity of choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

MRS. PEDRO VELA SR.

Arrangements are under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 2, from 4-7 p.m., and Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 7-9:15 a.m.

A rosary service will be held Monday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m., at the funeral chapel.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment following in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice, St. Mary’s Loving Care or to the charity of choice.

Mrs. Larry Ahrens, 58, nee Martha Reeh of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, in a San Antonio hospital.

Eugene Donald (Gene) Bode

Eugene Donald (Gene) Bode, 75, of Harper, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at Canterbury Court Nursing Home in Harlingen.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. at Lighthouse Fellowship Church in Harper with interment following in the Harper Community Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville where visitation was held Friday evening, Jan. 16.

Bode was a lifelong Harper resident, born March 25, 1939, the son of Floy B. Bode and Virginia Bode.         

He began working at Bode Feed and Supply when he was a young boy and later purchased the business from his father.

He was an active member of the Exotic Wildlife Association and the Texas Wildlife Association for many years.

Mrs. John T. Castillo


MRS. JOHN T. CASTILLO

Mrs. John T. Castillo, 92, nee Epifania Contreras of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at Knopp Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Reverends Fernando Zurita and D.G. McCoury officiating.

Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Mrs. Castillo was born Jan. 6, 1923, at Willow City, the daughter of Bictoriano Contreras and Maria Lopez Delgado Contreras. She married John Trejo Castillo on Sept. 27, 1937, in Ballinger. He preceded her in death.

Dr. Henry (Hank) Gartley


DR. HENRY (HANK) GARTLEY

Dr. Henry (Hank) Gartley, 81, of Sun City, California, and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 18, in Sun City, California, with the Rev. Chuck Klingman officiating.

Gartley was born April 27, 1933, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, the son of Howard and Mary Gartley.

After graduating from high school, Gartley enlisted in the U.S. Army where he met his first wife, Lois. After being severely injured in basic training, he was honorably discharged and the Gartleys moved to California in 1955 where they raised their family.

While working full time, Gartley attended chiropractic college and went on to practice chiropractic in Lakewood, California, for 28 years, retiring in 1995.

After retirement, he moved to Fredericksburg where he opened several small businesses, including the “Dog Haus”.

Grayson Jordan

Grayson Jordan, 93, of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015.

Arrangements are under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 5-7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home, with interment following at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Nature Conservancy or Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

Clarence Lloyd Nixon


CLARENCE LLOYD NIXON

Clarence Lloyd Nixon, 96, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at Knopp Assisted Living Center.

A funeral mass was celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Scott Janysek officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist, and Liz Tynan, the vocalist.

Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and rosary services, led by Deacon Patrick Klein, were held Tuesday evening, Jan. 20.

Nixon was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Fredericksburg, the son of William Jasper Nixon and Octivia Louise Ransleben Nixon. He married Mary Margaret Jung on Feb. 10, 1940. She preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2012.

He was a World War II veteran. For many years, was employed at Dooley’s Store.
