'Beyond area' goal for Harper netters
By Danny Hirt
Advancing all the way to the state championship round is an annual goal for every high school athletic team in the state of Texas.
For many schools, this is a lofty goal without too much chance of coming true.
But for the Harper High School Ladyhorns’ volleyball squad, it’s a legitimate desire.
After all, HHS posted an overall record of 30-7 last year and won its district with an unblemished 10-0 mark, advancing until being stopped by Weimar in area competition.
Harper head coach Gina Lumpkins agreed that her team’s goal is to win another league title, but that’s not all.
“We’re not going to stop there. We are working for a much deeper playoff run and not stop until the road takes up to Garland (location of the UIL state title round).
The district opponents are basically the same schools as they were in 2013, with the inclusion of Johnson City, thanks to the UIL’s realignment.
“We know every team in our district will play us tough,” Lumpkins admitted. She added that the Ladyhorns’ biggest league challenge will probably come from Junction.
