Rules announced for 2014 baking, preserves contest

Culinary artists wanting to see how their favorite peach recipe stacks up against the competition will get a chance to do just that this weekend at the Stonewall Peach JAMboree and Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, June 20-21.

Once again, the Stonewall Chamber of Commerce is hosting Baking, Preserves and Salsa Contests as part of the two-day celebration.

Following are the general rules and information for the contests which will be judged on Saturday.

•All entries are to be brought to the Stonewall Chamber Building, located at 250 Peach Street, between 8:30-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 21.

Judging begins at 10:45 a.m., and winning entries may be viewed at about 1 p.m. at the Stonewall Chamber Building.

•There is no entry fee.

•No commercial entries will be accepted.

•All entries become the property of the Stonewall Chamber of Commerce.

•The contest deadline is Saturday at 10 a.m.

•Top entries in all four categories will be auctioned off on Saturday afternoon during the Peach Auction, and all proceeds will go to the Stonewall Chamber of Commerce.

•Prizes will be awarded in each category, including $150 and a plaque for first; $125 for second; $100 for third, and $75 for fourth.

Peach Pies, Cobblers

Whether it’s a pie or cobbler, local bakers are urged to enter their favorite recipe in the peach pie and cobbler contests.

The following are rules for the peach pie and cobbler contests.

•Only one entry per household per category will be accepted.

•No fruit other than peaches may be used.

•One copy of the recipe must be provided for each entry.

•Two pies or two cobblers must be submitted for the recipe entered.

•Pies and cobblers must be in 8” to 9” disposable pans.

•No refrigerated-type pies or cobblers are eligible.

•One individual may submit entries in all categories.

Peach Preserves

Those who enjoy turning peaches into preserves are invited to enter their best jars in the peach preserves contest.

Following are the rules for the peach preserves contest.

•Only one entry per household per category will be accepted.

•No fruit other than peaches may be used.

•No artificial coloring may be used.

•One copy of the recipe must be provided for each entry.

•Two jars must be submitted for each recipe entered. The jar to be judged may be a half-pint, but the second jar must be a pint.

•The preserves must be in a standard brand pint jar or standard half-pint jar with non-decorative lids (example: Kerr, Ball, etc.). Caps and lids must be clean. Jars with dirty and/or rusty caps and lids will be disqualified.

•Must have been cooked within the last year (May 2013 through June 2014).

Peach Salsa

Those who enjoy making salsa are invited to enter the peach salsa contest.

Rules for the contest are as follows:

•Only one entry per household per category will be accepted.

•Peaches must be one of the ingredients.

•One copy of the recipe must be provided for each entry.

•Two jars must be submitted for the recipe entered. The jar to be judged may be a half-pint, but the second jar must be a pint.

•The salsa must be in a standard brand pint jar or standard half-pint jar with non-decorative lids (example: Kerr, Ball, etc.). Caps and lids must be clean. Jars with dirty and/or rusty caps and lids will be disqualified.

•Must have been cooked within the last year (May 2013 through June 2014).
