Harper softball falls in regional semis
By Danny Hirt —
When boiled down to its essence, the Harper High School softball team just couldn't get the hits or defensive stops when necessary as the Ladyhorns dropped both games to Shiner in last weekend's best-of-3 series in Region IV semifinal action.
The contests were played on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos.
The Lady Comanches now advance to the region finals to take on Weimar this coming weekend. The winner earns a berth in the May 28-31 state championship round slated for the Red and Charline McCombs Field on the University of Texas at Austin campus.
"I am very proud of this team and the many accomplishments they were able to achieve," said HHS head coach Scott Vasquez. "Our goal will remain the same — work to build the program and take it to the next level."
He added that by Harper "having experienced two incredible series in the playoff and facing the caliber of programs like Shiner will go a long way for us working toward that goal."
Harper, which finished the regular season as District 29 1A champions, ended the year with a 21-10 record.

The Lady Comanches left little doubt as to which team would move on in the playoffs when they tallied five runs in the top of the opening frame on their journey to a convincing 11-0 win over Harper.
Shiner managed to add a single run in the second inning and five more in the third to put the game out of reach.
"A big first inning by the Lady Comanches put the Ladyhorns in a huge hole," Vasquez said.
In that productive first frame, Shiner used a solo home run that was later followed by a grand slam homer to score five runs.
The only hits for Harper came from Julia Scott, Morgan Baethge and Kendall Baethge.
Pitcher Shelby Koenig struck out two batters while walking none in picking up the loss for the Ladyhorns.
"We have to give a lot of credit to Shiner," Vasquez said. "We ran into a very good team that, according to many of the coaches I spoke to last week when trying to get information, might be peaking at the right time. We did some things right in this series but we just couldn't match bats with them."

The Lady Comanches broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth frame on their way to a 7-2 victory over Harper in the opening game of the series Friday night.
In the fourth, Ladyhorn pitcher Koenig surrendered four singles — including three consecutive — and a double.
Shiner plated another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Trailing 7-0 in the top of the seventh, Harper managed to score twice, starting off with Hunter McDonald's single. After a hit batsman, Baley Felts loaded the bases with a hit. A walk to Dayzee Treiber brought in McDonald for the Ladyhorns' first run of the game. Moments later, pinch runner Andrea Mauldin crossed the plate when Koenig reached on a fielder's choice.
