Five netters to compete at state tennis
By Lisa Treiber-Walter
A final tournament and but a few opponents remain between five Fredericksburg High School varsity tennis players and state titles.
Taking nine qualifiers into the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region IV-3A Tennis Tournament in Corpus Christi last Wednesday and Thursday, Billie coaches saw five on their roster emerge with tickets to state.
The UIL 3A State Tennis Tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.
State qualifiers from Fredericksburg include: Sitman Wainwright and Parker Phillips, who will partner in the boys’ doubles competition; Myra Powell and Grace Igarta, who will team up in the girls’ doubles competition, and Hannah Boubel, who will go it alone in the girls’ singles division.
Powell/Igarta are regional champions, while Wainwright/Phillips and Boubel all finished second at region to earn their state playoff berths.
“Our kids really performed well at regionals,” said FHS Coach Randall King. “These kids represented FHS and Fredericksburg very well. We are proud of all of them.”
“Now, it is off to state where we will find the top two qualifiers from Regions 1, 2 and 3. It should be a challenge for all qualifiers at this level,” King said.
Boubel will be the first of the Fredericksburg lot to appear on the state courts as her quarterfinals singles appearance is slated for 8 a.m. against Kristina Johnson of Lufkin Hudson.
Other competitors in girls’ singles include: Mabry Nichols, of Longview Spring Hill; Jannah McMahen, of Vernon; Michaela Ellison, of Lampasas; Shelby Pirtle, of Wills Point; Holli Reynolds, of Wharton, and Ecaroh Jackson, of Caldwell.
Should Boubel win, she will play again in the semifinals at 2 p.m. the same day. The finals match in girls’ singles is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
Boubel fought her way to state after losing the regionals semifinals match, but then rallied with a win for third place and qualified for state by virtue of a playback against the second-place finisher.
Taking the court at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 28, in state quarterfinals at the same time in their different divisions will be Billie netters Igarta/Powell in girls’ doubles and Wainwright/Phillips in boys’ doubles.
Igarta/Powell finished as regional champions by defeating Bellville — a team they had lost to last year in the semifinals, King said.
In their 10 a.m. state premiere, they will face Emily Graf/Lauren Stanley, of Vernon, across the net.
Should they win, semifinals will be held at 2 p.m. that day. Girls’ doubles finals are set for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
Other competitors in girls’ doubles competition include: Rachel McMillan/Sabra Zullo, of Abilene Wylie; Devon Mann/Lorin Robertson, of Bellville; Autria Compton/Sabrina Barnfield, of Kilgore; Sandhiya Ravichandran/Lillian Ford, of College Station; Staci Nish/Hadley Heiner, of Groesbeck, and Madelyn Howard/Liana Jo, of Frisco Lone Star.
Wainwright/Phillips will also appear at 10 a.m. in their state semifinals, matching up against Kyle Miler/Noah Jean, of College Station.
Should they win, they will also play in semifinals at 2 p.m. on Monday. Finals are slated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Wainwright/Phillips took second at region, bested only by a duo of brothers from Hondo.
Other competitors in the boys’ doubles semifinals include: Sanjit Lanka/Takashi Thomas, of Kilgore; Dillon Deatherage/Isaac Kil, of Alvarado; Rayce Roberson/Brendan Thompson, of Abilene Wylie; Dylan McDonald/Ethan Herrick, of Frisco Lone Star; Pete Rochat/Jack Roacht, of Hondo, and Adam Reeves/Alec Lucas, of Center.
Fredericksburg will not have representation in the boys’ singles or mixed doubles draws.
Other FHS players competing at region were Josh Tree and Jake Pluenneke, who bowed out in the second round of play to “a very good Kingsville team that went on to place fourth,” King said.
Matt Bain and Allison Vaughn just missed this trip to state by sliding into third place by defeating district champs from Wimberley in a rematch of the district semifinals. “Unfortunately, they did not get an opportunity for a playback,” King said.
The state match will mark an end to a year that has seen nine FHS senior tennis players lead their trip to the state team tournament and rack up wins across the season schedules.
“We are very proud of this entire group of seniors,” King said, citing Josh Tree, Matt Bain, Kash Millard, Sergio Flores, Austin Walter, Shannon Smith, Kristen Kilgore, Shailey Hawkins and Allison Vaughn.
“They have all learned valuable life lessons throughout their high school career participating in athletics. Each of them will move on to bigger and better things in their lives. It is great to know that, as coaches, we can be a part of that foundation,” King said.
The following are individual match results from region.
