Softball clinches postseason berth

With a victory at Bandera Monday evening, the Fredericksburg High School varsity softball team can clinch a share of the District 27-3A championship as the Billies are tied with Bandera and Navarro at 6-3 in district play.

First pitch against Bandera, in a rescheduled game originally slated for Thursday, is set for 7 p.m.

Last night, FHS fell in eight innings to Wimberley 6-5, but clinched a playoff spot on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Navarro in eight innings.

The win over Navarro puts the Billies in a tie-breaker situation if both FHS and Navarro win in their final regular season game as the two schools will split the season series. Navarro defeated FHS 6-4 on March 25.

Wimberley 6, FHS 5

In their last home game this season, the Billies played Wimberley to a near-draw, thanks in large part to a pair of home runs by Camry Weinheimer, but fell to the Texans 6-5 in eight innings.

“Each team came out ready to play and were getting three up and three down,” head coach Mitchel Etzel said. “The Billies’ bats started clicking by the second and they started taking the lead little by little and had it until the sixth inning.”

After trailing 1-0 through three innings, FHS scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, though Wimberley scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

“Careless errors were a big cause and it effected the girls momentum and confidence,” Etzel said. “Thankfully, in the bottom of the 7th their bats got hot and the girls tied the game 5-5.”

“However, in the 8th inning Wimberley was able to score one run and that won them the game,” he added. “It was a tough loss, especially for the senior girls being that it was their last home game they will ever play.”
