Country schools tour, barbecue this weekend
The Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools will host a Country Schools and Texas Vineyards Tour, Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6.
The event is a way of combining “scenic driving” with stops along the way to visit historic country schools and Texas wineries. Visitors will see how life was back in the days before modern things like video games and iPods.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, open houses will be held at the Cave Creek, Junction, Nebgen, Rheingold and Willow City schools.
Starting at 10:30 a.m. the next day, Sunday, April 6, a barbecue fundraiser will be held at the American Legion Hall on U.S. Highway 87 South. Barbecue chicken or pork plates with the trimmings will be sold at $9 per plate.
Drive-through and take-out plate sales begin at 10:30 a.m., while dine-in at the hall begins at 11 a.m.
Prize tickets are available now through April 6. The prizes have been donated by merchants and individuals from Gillespie County and the surrounding areas.
Proceeds will go to maintenance, improvements and restoration of the 12 schools.
