FHS One-Act Play to compete at district UIL contest Friday
The Fredericksburg High School theater department will be performing in the University Interscholastic League District 27-3A One-Act Play Competition on Friday at Canyon Lake High School with their production of Celeste Raspanti’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.”
Performances begin at 1 p.m. and run back-to-back, with FHS slated to perform last between 5-6 p.m.
Fredericksburg will also host a community performance of their one-act entry on Wednesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the FHS auditorium. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $4 for adults and $2 for students. Faculty members and children 10 and under will be admitted free of charge.
“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is set during 1942-1945 in the Jewish ghetto of Terezin and tells the story of a young girl named Raja Englanderova who was separated from her family in Prague.
“Amidst the heartache and hurt during those dark times, Raja and the children she came to know in the camp, were taught to keep love, courage and hope at the center of everything from a school teacher named Irena Synkova,” FHS theater director Randi Jackson said. “She made it possible for the children to express their feelings in poems, through artwork, and in song. The story of those years at Terezin was born from those poems and pictures that were later collected and published in the book, ‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly.’”
