Netters back on courts this weekend
By Lisa Treiber-Walter —
Fresh off a nearly two-week-long gap in action, Fredericksburg High School’s varsity tennis team will be looking to capitalize on “fresh legs” this Friday and Saturday, March 7-8.
The squad will lead into Spring Break 2014 with the Billies’ first-ever appearance in the Clemens/Steele Invitational, which will be played on Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District courts.
“This will be a new tournament for us,” said FHS Coach Randall King, who explained that Fredericks-burg, historically, has been tied up at this point in the spring season with team tennis playoffs.
Now that team tennis competition is completely self-contained in the fall, the date fell open and the tourney presented itself as a new prospect for the local “Big Red” roster.
The added benefit, of course, is that the Billies will get a chance to match up against some unknown forces — some unfamiliar faces in a previously-undefined environment.
The sheer variety of schools and different scenarios that will present themselves in this week’s upcoming outing will be a good experience for Fredericksburg, King said.
After this week and the subsequent spring break lull, Billie netters will resume on the courts with their home-hosted Hill Country Championships Thursday through Saturday, March 20-22.
