Netters finish third at Hill Country Classic

By Lisa Treiber-Walter

When Fredericksburg High School tennis coach Randall King put his varsity players up against a “measuring stick” in the form of Class 5A and 4A schools at Mason’s tournament over the weekend, they left a pretty tall mark on the wall.

The Billies finished third overall in the 2014 Hill Country Classic, behind first-place Duncanville and second-place Abilene Wylie.

Fredericksburg’s 129-point finish placed it ahead of Class 5A schools San Angelo Central (123 points) in fourth place, San Antonio Churchill (108 points) in fifth place and Abilene Cooper (82 points) in sixth place.

“This tourney always provides a great challenge for our kids as it puts them up against some of the best tennis players in the state,” King said.

In addition to getting exposed to “a lot of really good tennis both days, it forces our kids to play at a higher level,” King said.

This week will be an “off” week for the team, but practices will continue to work them hard as they focus on improving their conditioning, the coach said.

Then, just at the front-end of Spring Break 2014, Fredericksburg’s players will venture into the Clemens/Steele Invitational on March 7-8.

“This will be a new tournament for us,” King said.
