Heritage girls advance to state tournament

By Danny Hirt

Making the game of basketball look easy, the Lady Eagles from Heritage School cruised past Houston Family Christian Academy Tuesday night, 70-36, to advance to the TAPPS 1A girls’ basketball state Final Four for the first time in school history.

The game, which was played in Temple, was set up by the Lady Eagles’ 52-44 win over Brownsville First Baptist on Saturday.

With last night’s victory, Heritage will play the winner of Tuesday’s contest between San Antonio Gateway Christian (21-16) and Lake Jackson Brazosport Christian (12-6) on Friday in Mansfield.

Also going to the semifinals will be Plainview Christian (12-5), a team that will take on the winner of Tuesday’s match-up between Granbury North Central Texas (18-4) and Lubbock Kingdom Prep (15-11).

The championship game is slated for Saturday, also in Mansfield.

Kami Jones led her Heritage School team in all five statistical categories kept by the Lady Eagle bean-counters in the school’s 70-36 win over Houston Family Christian.

In addition to a career-high 31 points, Jones also topped the charts in assists (six), rebounds (11), steals (nine) and blocked shots (four).

Christina Harpold netted another 17 points for Heritage.

The Lady Eagles powered their way to a 22-12 advantage after the opening quarter and never looked back.

Leading 36-19 at intermission, Heritage piled on the points in the second half, outscoring Houston Family 34-17 in the final 16 minutes of play.

“I have been a part of some really good sports teams in my life,” said Lady Eagles’ head coach Mike McKinnon. “But this team is as special as they come. The girls have overcome adversity on a daily basis.”
