FHS boys eliminated from hoop playoffs
By Matt Ward —
A district-championship winning season for the 24th-ranked Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball team came to an end Tuesday night as the Billies fell to sixth-ranked San Antonio Sam Houston 66-50 at Smithson Valley High School.
“No matter the outcome of tonight’s game, I was really proud of our guys. They were exhausted after the game and gave everything they had,” head coach Tim Kaman said. “They left it all out on the court. That is what you have to do every time you compete. You can only hope that it is enough. Tonight it just was not enough.”
Fredericksburg ends the season as the District 27-3A champions with a 28-9, 9-1 district record, tying a school record for number of season victories and winning two tournament titles.
“This was a wonderful group of young men. I could not ask for a finer group,” Kaman said. “After the game, I told our kids to be proud of what they accomplished. As a whole, our body of work was tremendous. They should be proud of their accomplishments. I am proud of them.”
Sam Houston 66, FHS 50
A 14-1 deficit midway through the first quarter proved to be too much for Fredericksburg to overcome as the Billies fell 66-50 to San Antonio Sam Houston in the Region IV-3A quarterfinals at Smithson Valley High School Tuesday night.
“The first two possessions of the ball game were a bad sign of what was to come,” Kaman said. “Our first possession ended in a turnover that led to an easy lay-up, then we missed a shot and they threw it long to a guy wide open for a lay-up. All of a sudden we were down.”
Unable to get into their full court press defense and apply pressure to the Hurricane attack, the Billies were unable to get into their offensive rhythm which relies on fast break opportunities off turnovers.
“Every time we had an opportunity to cut the lead, we would miss free throws, turn it over, or just not hit a shot,” Kaman said. “It just was not our night. Unfortunately, there is no coming back from a night like this when you are in the playoffs.”
