Boys' soccer edges Boerne 4-3
By Lisa Treiber-Walter —
Robert Louis Stevenson may have been writing a famous work in 1886, but he could very well have been describing the 2014 Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ soccer team when he penned “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”
On one hand, the Billies show flashes of being the fast-paced, accurate team they are supposed to be, but then they find themselves having to soon pay for costly mistakes made by their more unruly, uncontrollable side, according to FHS Coach Shannon Petsch.
“We are Jekyll and Hyde right now,” he admitted following his squad’s 4-3 district opening win over Boerne on the road on Saturday, Feb. 8.
(Last night’s game at Kerrville Tivy was postponed due to icy weather until tonight at 7 p.m. in Antler Stadium.)
“We are finding ourselves, finally,” Petsch said, “But when things go wrong, it goes wrong.”
On the positive side, FHS started out with a 2-4-1 win-loss-tie count in pre-district tournament play, but over the course of the past five games, it has posted a 3-1-1 improvement.
“The team is really starting to find its stride, but I still see some Jekyll and Hyde games in the future until we get the rest of the kinks worked out,” Petsch said.
