JV boys’ soccer shuts out Hawks, 9-0
Fredericksburg High School’s junior varsity boys’ soccer team defeated Canyon Lake, 9-0, there, last night to bring its record to 3-2.
Prior to that, the squad dropped to Marble Falls, 7-0, at home last Friday, Jan. 31.
Next on the schedule is the start of district against Boerne’s JV team on Saturday, Feb. 8, in a noon showdown at the Greyhounds’ stadium.
FHS JV 9 – Canyon Lake 0
“The boys played well and showed some growth and maturity,” said FHS Coach Michael Gutierrez last night, Feb. 4, after his squad shut down Canyon Lake, 9-0, on the road.
“They were given the challenge to play better and they responded just as well as I expected them to,” he said.
A slightly “sloppy” first half saw the Billies pull to a 3-0 lead by the mid-game break.
“We were able to regain our focus and play a much better second half,” Gutierrez said. “Our passes were more direct and accurate. We took quality shots and finished well.”
The FHS JV added six more goals in the second period of play to take the final 9-0 win.
Christian Blohm finished with a “hat trick” of three goals, Fabian Reyes scored a “brace” (two goals,) and one goal apiece was contributed by Jesse Aguilar, Jesse Martinez and Christian Rivas. Noah Mabery, who had moved up to midfield from defense, scored the final goal of the night.
“Ian Kendrick did a superb job for us at outside midfield and assisted on three of our goals,” Gutierrez said.
“It was a very good win for us after coming off of a resounding defeat last week,” he added.
Marble Falls 7 - FHS JV 0
The going was rougher on Friday, Jan. 31, when the Fredericksburg JV hosted Marble Falls, but was dealt a 7-0 loss by the Mustangs.
“With both of our regular goalkeepers out, Noe Martinez and John Marin played that position admirably for us,” Gutierrez said.
“Our young age showed as we went up against an older and more disciplined Marble Falls team,” he said. “We’ll continue to work on playing our positions and maintaining our focus.”
