Boys' soccer to start district play
By Lisa Treiber-Walter —
The start of District 54-4A loop play looms ahead this Friday, Feb. 7, for the Fredericksburg High School (FHS) varsity boys’ soccer team and, if the “gauges” are reading correctly of late, then the Billies are ready.
Last night, the squad went kick-for-kick against Canyon Lake to tie on the road, 2-2.
And, in Friday’s appearance in the FHS Stadium, Fredericksburg stood its ground against a “rough-and-tumble” Marble Falls squad to win, 4-2.
Those past two games have brought the Billies to a 4-5-2 record heading into the spin-up of the district rotation.
This year’s agenda pits FHS against four loop opponents in a series of eight games evenly split between home and away destinations over the next five weeks.
For the district opener on Friday night, FHS will load up the bus and travel the estimated 45-minute drive southeast to Boerne High School. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. in the Greyhounds’ stadium.
At this point, the outcome of the district starter is anyone’s guess since these two squads split results (1-1) against each other last year when a win apiece went to whichever team held the home field advantage.
It was also against Boerne High School that Fredericksburg opened its district rotation last year — besting the Greyhounds 3-1 before a home crowd.
(The tables would turn when the two teams met later in the season on Boerne’s turf. The Greyhounds managed to redeem their earlier loss with a matching 3-1 score.)
Fredericksburg’s kick-off victory against Boerne High would turn out to be the Billies’ only win of the 2013 district competition. They finished the year’s efforts with a win-loss-tie count of 3-17-3 overall and 1-6-1 in district.
