Boys' soccer optimistic about season

By Lisa Treiber-Walter

Although hesitant to say he is fielding a “seasoned” squad, Fredericksburg High School boys’ varsity soccer coach Shannon Petsch is optimistic about the Billies’ 2014 schedule that lies ahead, following their performance in last weekend’s season opener.

The team’s first outing was a four-game appearance in the Marble Falls Tournament in which they finished with a win, two losses and a tie.

“Overall, we were pleased with how the weekend went,” Petsch said. “We got our players a lot of playing time that we usually don’t get.”

Coming up next will be the Smithson Valley Tournament tomorrow through Saturday, Jan. 16-18. FHS will kick off play against Waco High School on Friday. (Fredericksburg’s junior varsity boys are also expected to participate in this tournament to open their season.)

Petsch said, “Like the Marble Falls tourney, this one will be loaded with quality teams” — something the Class 3A Billies are accustomed to as they continue to compete against larger schools in District 54-4A. (University Interscholastic League competition does not include Class 3A soccer seasons, although plans are in place for it to expand and accommodate 3A teams in the 2015 season.)

Expecting his team to hang tough with the larger squads, Petsch said he will be looking for a bump up in shots on goal in this coming weekend’s contest.

“Our biggest problem right now is scoring. We have the ability to do it, but the kids are still looking for the ‘perfect shot’ and, by doing so, we are not taking many shots on goal,” Petsch added.

“This is something that will come with time,” he said, adding that already, his players have shown improvement as the weekend wore on.
