In what head coach Tim Kaman called “one of the best tournaments we have had in the 19 years I have been here,” the Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball team finished 5-1 over the weekend to win the Fredericksburg Billie Basketball Tournament Thursday-Saturday.
“It was a nice three days for us after coming off of the Christmas break,” Kaman said.
The Billies will travel to Austin St. Michael’s Friday afternoon for a 4 p.m. contest before heading to San Antonio Hawkins Tuesday at 7 p.m.
FHS defeated San Antonio FEAST 64-63 to clinch the tournament title after falling to College Station 81-54 earlier on Saturday.
The Billies defeated four tournament opponents on Thursday and Friday, St. Dominic Savio 46-32, Hidalgo 65-46, state-ranked Liberty Hill 58-54 and Junction 67-29.
Clayton Braden, Kyle Reeh and Austin Rodriguez were named to the all-tournament team for Fredericksburg.

With the championship game coming down to the wire, Fredericksburg overcame a last-second shot to defeat San Antonio FEAST 64-63 Saturday evening.
“I think the fans got their money’s worth. I was happy with how we responded after the College Station game,” Kaman said. “The game went back and forth for a while, but then they were able to stretch the lead to 14.”
After trailing for much of the contest, FHS took a late lead with 1:30 to play, but a turnover and FEAST field goal put the Billies down 63-62 with five seconds to play.
Rodriguez drew a foul with two seconds remaining and hit both free throws to clinch the victory for Fredericksburg.
“We did a nice job of getting stops in the second half. That was the key,” Kaman said. “We just did a better job of playing defense.”
