Zweite Weihnachten to offer Second Christmas goodies Dec. 26
A German tradition of celebrating Zweite Weihnachten (Second Christmas) will continue on Thursday, Dec. 26, from 2-5 p.m. in the Gillespie County Historical Society’s social hall.
Hosted by the Fredericksburg German Club, the gathering will feature fellowship, traditional German baked goods, and the singing of traditional Christmas carols in German.
Residents and visitors are invited to attend an afternoon of traditional German holiday activities.
Zweite Weihnachten features warm refreshments and traditional baked goods, including such past favorites as Stollen (a pastry) and Glühwein (warmed wine).
During the festivities, all attendees will be invited to join in the singing of traditional Christmas carols in German.
Those attending Zweite Weihnachten on Thursday can use either the Main Street entrance or the San Antonio Street entrance to the grounds.
The tradition of the second Christmas was established long ago in Germany. Since Christmas Day was considered a time for religious reflection and a day to spend with close family members, the day after Christmas was observed with people in a village gathering to rejoice in the season.
Pioneer Museum enhances the “old German” flavor since the facility represents a mid-19th Century settlement created by those from German heritage.
Anyone who needs more information about the event is invited to phone Elsie Burrer at 997-2009.
