FHS boys win fifth in a row

Heading into the Christmas break on a hot streak, the Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball team won five consecutive games this week, defeating Hondo 46-43 on the road Monday night after sweeping all four games at the Canyon Lake tournament over the weekend.

After a Christmas break, the Billies will host their annual Fredericksburg Billie Basketball Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 26-28.

The tournament will open with FHS taking on Junction Dec. 26 at 9 a.m. Complete information on the tournament will appear in next week’s issue.

FHS 46, Hondo 43

Outlasting the Owls on the road, Fredericksburg held off Hondo 46-43 Monday night in the final FHS game before the Christmas break.

“We really had an opportunity to step on our opponent’s throat when we had them down, but we let up and it was almost our downfall,” head coach Tim Kaman said. “Hondo is a team that shoots a lot of threes, and when they are missing, they can fall behind, but when they are hitting, watch out. They can erase a deficit very quickly.”

Kyle Reeh led the Billies offensively with 10 points.

“We were able to build a lead because they were cold in the first half. All of sudden, they started hitting threes and got back in the game,” Kaman said. “The bad thing is that we could not score in the second half. We had lay-ups and missed them.”

“Even though we tried to give the game away, we came up with a defensive stop to win the game,” he added. “It was very ugly in the second half for us, but we were able to come up with a very good road win as we go into the Christmas holidays.”
