Billies defeat Somerset 38-27
By Matt Ward —
Senior cornerback Matthew McManigle intercepted three passes, while Brayden Beard and Paco Martinez each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team held off a late rally to defeat Somerset 38-27 Friday night in the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs at Frank Mata Memorial Stadium in San Antonio.
“We’re extremely happy about winning a playoff game,” Fredericksburg head football coach Lance Moffett said Monday. “That’s a big deal against a good program with good players. I told the kids this morning there’s not anybody that’s not good anymore.”
“The whole question last week was are we going to let the excitement of the playoffs get in the way of winning a playoff game,” Moffett said, “I’m extremely proud about the way the kids handled it.”
Defense forces turnovers
Defensively, the Billies were boosted by the return of senior linebacker Adolfo Enciso, who helped slow the rushing attack of Somerset’s bruising running back Perez.
“If we go into that game without Adolfo, we might lose because he and Wyatt Brannan are arguably two of the best linebackers I’ve ever seen,” he said. “They will rip your head off, they read plays well and they understand the game.”
“It didn’t matter which side they went to. If they went to Wyatt’s side, Wyatt would fill the gap and Adolfo would make the tackle and then they’d flip if it went the other way,” he added. “They’re able to do that because the defensive line is keeping the offensive line off of them.”
