Today is Veterans Day, and city, county, state and federal offices are closed along with financial institutions and some businesses.
A Veterans Day observance will be held this morning at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Courtyard at the National Museum of the Pacific War. Serving as this year’s keynote speaker will be Gen. Edward Rice, United States Air Force Commanding Officer of Lackland Air Force Base (ret.).
A number of schools are also holding Veterans Day events today. The Fredericksburg Primary School held a Veterans Day assembly from 8-8:20 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the school; Fredericksburg Elementary School teachers are teaching students about veterans and offering opportunities for students to write letters to veterans; the Fredericksburg Middle School is hosting a Veterans Day ceremony from 8:25-9:20 a.m. in the FMS Gym; the Harper Veterans Day program will be at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Harper, and Heritage School is holding a Veterans Day Chapel at First Baptist Church from 8:15-9:30 a.m.
Frantzen-Ahrens Post 7105, VFW, will hold its Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. this morning at the post home, while the Louis Jordan Post 244, American Legion, is inviting all active duty military personnel and veterans to an event this afternoon from 1-3 p.m.
Fredericksburg Independent School District Board of Trustees are meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in the Central Administration Building. Agenda items include consideration of special building projects and an appraisal board election. A special meeting will be held at 6:15 p.m. for a demonstration of a 3-D machining printer.
Because of the holiday today, the Gillespie County Commissioners will instead meet in regular session on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Gillespie County Courthouse.
The local chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) will meet this morning at 11:30 a.m. at Andy’s Steak and Seafood Grille.
Fredericksburg Shops Advisory Committee invites all Gillespie County retailers to the November meeting of the retail group tonight from 5:50-7:10 p.m. at Der Küchen Laden.
Fredericksburg High School Project Graduation 2014 will be hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser tonight from 6:30-8 p.m. at the St. Mary's Holy Family Center. All proceeds benefit FHS Project Graduation 2014.
Entries are due today in the 2013 Vintage German Ornament Contest sponsored by the Mayor's Christmas Committee. Ornaments must be dropped off at the Fredericksburg Brewing Company between 1-4 p.m. today.
Fredericksburg High School varsity football defeated Bandera, 28-10, on Friday night to finish the regular season at 9-1 and go undefeated in district to win the District 27-3A championship. The Billies will play Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Somerset at Frank Mata Memorial Stadium in San Antonio in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
The FHS tennis team finished second at the UIL State 3A State Team Tennis Tournament in Abilene on Friday and Saturday.
At the UIL State Cross Country Meet on Saturday, two FHS runners competed in the 3A division. Juan Hernandez finished 40th and Clarissa Sanchez was 78th.
The FHS varsity girls' and boys' golf teams are playing in the Brandeis Invitational at Fair Oaks Golf Club this morning starting at 9 a.m.
Harper High School varsity football lost to Junction, 24-7, on Friday night to end their season.
The Harper High School girls won the State 1A title at the UIL State Cross Country Meet on Saturday. In the boys' division, Micah Middleton finished 58th.
Heritage football defeated San Antonio Believers Academy, 52-8, on Friday night.
