Sanchez, Hernandez advance to state
By Richard Zowie —
For the first time in nine years, both the Fredericksburg High School varsity girls and varsity boys are sending a runner to the state finals.
Clarissa Sanchez finished eighth overall among 170 girls in Region 4, Class 3A varsity girls, while Juan Hernandez finished ninth among 184 varsity boy runners.
Next up for Sanchez and Hernandez will be the State 3A meet, which will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. The 3A girls’ race begins at 10:40 a.m., and the 3A boys’ race begins at 11:10 a.m.
The last time an FHS individual varsity girls runner made it to state was 2009, when Kayla Castillo finished 31st among 3A runners.
The last time an individual varsity boys runner made it to state was 2011, when Bo Porter finished third among 3A runners. That year, the varsity boys finished sixth at state.
As teams, both varsity squads narrowly missed chances to compete at state. The varsity girls finished fifth with 150 points — eight points behind third-place La Feria (which had 142). The boys finished seventh with 157 points, 11 points behind third-place Progresso (146).
To qualify for state, teams had to finish in the top three.
Sanchez, ranked 16th in the girls division, will race at 10:50 a.m. while Hernandez, ranked 11th in the boys division, will race at 11:10 a.m. The top 10 finishers will earn medals.
