Harper football wins homecoming game

The red-hot Harper Longhorns staked themselves to a 28-0 lead with four touchdowns in the first period on their way to a 49-7 Homecoming football victory against Center Point Friday night.

The win was the first one for the ’Horns in District 14-1A Division I action.

The 2013 campaign comes to an end this Friday when Harper travels to Junction for a 7:30 p.m. encounter.

Less than four minutes into the game, the Horns’ got on the scoreboard when Guy Stevenson carried the ball over from seven yards out. Briley Jalowy connected on the point-after kick, giving the hosts an early 7-0 advantage.

On the night, Jalowy was successful on all seven of his PAT attempts.

After holding Center Point to a punt, Harper scored again, this time thanks to a 33-yard pass from quarterback Gus Sagraves to Cole Elliott with 6:38 remaining in the quarter.

The Longhorns struck two more times in the stanza, starting with a four-yard run by Jayden Baumann, followed shortly by another Sagraves TD pass, this time to Brayden Hagendorf with nine seconds left in the first.

For the game, Hagendorf caught three passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 213 rushing yards on 23 carries. Stevenson was the Longhorns’ leading receiver with 60 yards on a pair of receptions.

The host Pirates managed to score their only touchdown with 7:10 left before intermission when freshman signal caller Aaron Walters fired a five-yard pass to teammate Nate Ramirez. The PAT was good, pulling the hosts to within 21 points at 28-7.
