Billies to host Bandera Friday
By Matt Ward —
For the first time since 1998, the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team earned a district championship as the Billies’ 36-21 road victory over Wimberley last Friday clinched FHS its first District 27-3A football crown.
The accomplishment can be somewhat tarnished, however, if the Billies fail to take care of business this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in their regular season finale at home against Bandera, according to FHS head coach Lance Moffett.
“We’ve got one more step to put an exclamation point on it. If it is undefeated district champs, okay, you really are,” Moffett said Monday. “If you stumble against Bandera, maybe you got lucky against Navarro. But if you beat Bandera and you’re 5-0, no doubt you are the district champions.”
The Bulldogs are expected to provide a heavy challenge as Bandera could still make the playoffs with an upset win over Fredericksburg and a Wimberley loss to Boerne.
Bandera (3-6, 1-3 district) opened their season with wins over George West 42-12 and Devine 34-20 before a five-game losing streak to Llano 21-17, Comfort 38-21, La Vernia 35-10, Wimberley 47-7 and Canyon Lake.
The Bulldogs defeated Boerne 35-23 before falling to Geronimo Navarro 42-21 at home last week.
“They are truly better than their record,” Moffett said. “They can play with anybody in the district. If they can put it together, we’re in for a long night.”
