HHS band advances to state competition

Making their second straight and 10th overall appearance at UIL state competition, the Harper Longhorn Band will take the field inside the Alamodome in San Antonio Monday at 8:54 a.m.

The Longhorns advanced to state by placing fourth overall Saturday at the UIL Area E Marching Competition at San Antonio’s East Central High School.

“We were ranked second on three of the five judges’ sheets (at area),” band director Charles Sander said. “We are looking forward to doing our best at state. The kids have worked really hard to be ready to go.”

In Class 1A, Harper finished third best in the state in 1991, 1997, 1999 and 2007. The school also took sixth place in the 2005 state competition and 16th in 2011.

Harper will be the seventh of 17 bands to compete in the Class 1A state prelims, with the top bands advancing to the finals at 7 p.m. Monday.
