Billies to face unbeaten Navarro Friday

By Matt Ward —

Mathematically, the chances are so remote that the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team will miss the postseason, it has become practically a foregone conclusion that the Billies, who are 6-1 (2-0 district), will make the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

With a recent UIL rule change adding a fourth playoff team, there’s even a chance that FHS could lose their final three games and limp into the postseason, but Billie head football coach Lance Moffett isn’t one for taking chances.

“I told the kids on Saturday that I don’t want to be that fourth place team,” Moffett said. “I don’t want to be the beneficiary of the UIL changing their policy. I want to leave no doubt that we deserve to be there.”

With a playoff spot all but assured, Fredericksburg has its sights set on a larger goal: their first District 27-3A championship.

Standing in their way are the 7-0 (2-0 district) Geromino Navarro Panthers, who host the Billies Friday night at 7:30 p.m. inside Erwin-Lee Stadium.

“We wanted a program where every week becomes the most important game we’ve ever played and that’s what’s happening,” Moffett said. “For this opponent in particular, you have to be able to match their intensity. They play with an intensity that nobody else plays with and I’ve heard it since the second day I got here.”
