Billies defeat Canyon Lake for first district win
By Matt Ward —
Four years have passed since the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team has defeated a district opponent other than Bandera.
With their 38-14 road win over Canyon Lake to open District 27-3A play, the Billies (5-1, 1-0 district) finally “got the monkey off our back,” FHS head coach Lance Moffett said Monday.
“It was the biggest win since we’ve been here just because of the nature of it,” he said. “From a whole program and community standpoint, it was a huge victory. Now let’s go see what we can really do.”
Facing perhaps the most physically imposing team they have played so far this season, the Billies began Friday’s district opener on fire as the FHS defense forced a pair of three-and-outs to set up back-to-back touchdowns.
“Canyon Lake was a good opponent. We hadn’t been beat up like that physically in several weeks,” Moffett said. “I told them (before the game) that this was the best opponent we’ve played since Burnet and that it was going to be a war and it was.”
