Runners finish in top ten at UTSA meet
By Richard Zowie —
Despite the heavy rains and lots of mud the day before on Friday, Fredericksburg High School cross country teams competed on a firm course in bright, sunny weather at the UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic on Saturday, Sept. 21 in San Antonio.
The Fredericksburg boys placed sixth out of 22 teams while the girls placed eighth out of 23 teams.
They also had four top-25 finishes: Clarissa Sanchez in 12th place, Nick Martinez in 21st place, Serena Rivera in 22nd place and Juan Hernandez in 24th place.
FHS’ next cross country race will be close to home on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park.
“An injury to one of our boys runners knocked the boys team back about two team spots, but we were still able to manage our goal of making it into the top six,” said head coach Dan Aldrich.
The coach described the UTSA Romo Classic as an important meet since it’s the only time of year FHS can compete against the best competition in its district and region at the same time.
“It is at this point in the season that the evaluations and scouting reports are complete, and now it is work time to get our team speed where we want it if we want to reach our season goals at the district and regional meets in four weeks,” Aldrich added. “Right now, our girls’ team is about a 30-second team time average behind the defending district champion Bandera. For our boys’ team, they are about a 1:20 team time average behind the defending district champion Boerne.”
“For both squads, our goals are within reach, but we have a lot of work to do and it will be the ones who are focused, dedicated, and healthy to step it up and do what it takes to have the end of the season success we are striving for,” he added.
