Lampasas to offer tough test for Fredericksburg
By Matt Ward —
After a physical war last year which included multiple ejections and a critical quote from the opposing coach, the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team will have to be ready for anything as they host the Lampasas Badgers for Parents’ Night Friday at 7:30 p.m. at FHS Stadium.
The Billies, who defeated the Badgers 22-19 on the road last season, will face a Lampasas squad with a new head coach looking to rebound from a 1-9 finish in 2012.
“That was kind of our keynote win last year, to go on the road to Lampasas in a tough environment against a team who had been 10-2 the year before, and win,” FHS head coach Lance Moffett said Monday. “They’re a good team who’s lost to some good teams. Their record doesn’t reflect who they are as a program.”
Lampasas opened the 2013 season with a 47-6 win over Smithville before losing consecutive games to Austin Travis 55-28 and Lorena 35-6.
“They come off the ball quick and hit you in the mouth and you’ve got to be ready,” Moffett said.
The Badgers will operate the same Wing-T offense as they ran last season, although they have added a shotgun spread formation this year to diversify the attack.
The FHS head coach said Badgers running back Gary Spencer is “as good a back as we’ve seen all year. He’s tough and powerful in between the tackles, but he’s got enough speed to get the edge on the outside.”
