After a disappointing conclusion to their hotly-contested season opening 40-27 home loss to Burnet, the Fredericksburg High School varsity football team will be looking to unleash their brand of “Fredericksburg football” at upstart San Antonio Memorial this weekend.

Unlike most varsity contests, the Billies and Minutemen will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday evening at San Antonio Mata Stadium, instead of the familiar 7:30 p.m. start time.

Though the Billies have never lost to the Minutemen, Fredericksburg High School head football coach Lance Moffett called Memorial “a team on the rise” after they  defeated Pearsall 31-14 on the road last week for their first victory in two seasons despite gaining 148 yards of total offense on the road.

The Minutemen’s 4-3 defense forced three fumbles and two interceptions against Pearsall to help lead Memorial to victory.

“They’re a program on the rise, but they’re not there, yet,” Moffett said. “You can see that their kids are starting to play the game right so that scares you a little bit because once they all buy in, then they’re going to have a shot.”
