Battle-tested against Class 4A and 5A competition, the Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball team will head back on the road this weekend for the Smithson Valley tournament.
Tourney play opens Thursday as the Billies face Round Rock Westwood at 10 a.m., Cypress Creek at 1 p.m. and San Antonio Madison at 2 p.m.
Fredericksburg will then travel to Llano Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
Over the weekend, FHS won two of five games at the Austin ISD tournament, finishing in third place in the bronze bracket.
Loss to Boerne Champion
At home Tuesday night, the Billies came out strong before falling to 4A Boerne Champion 25-17, 16-25, 20-25, 19-25.
“We were close to pulling off a big win,” Roemer said. “I like the way we played, but we just had trouble closing out sets two, three and four.”
The two schools were tied at 19-19 late in the third set before Champion went on a 6-1 run to close the set. FHS took an 18-16 lead late in set four before the Chargers ended the match on a 9-1 run.
“The ball did not bounce the right way late in the sets. Sometimes it happens that way,” Roemer said. “It was an entertaining match with some big plays and some big digs on defense. I like where we are headed and the commitment this group has to continuing to improve.”
