Monday’s regular season opener for both the Class 3A Fredericksburg High School and Class 1A Harper High School varsity volleyball teams, dubbed “The Battle of Gillespie County,” turned into an all-out war as the Billies prevailed in a grueling five set match in the FHS gymnasium over the visiting Longhorns.

“What a match! A roller coaster and we survived,” FHS head coach Jason Roemer said. “I thought both teams did some things well and then had problems executing in certain stretches of the match.”

After the smoke cleared, Fredericksburg came out on top, winning 25-8, 13-25, 25-19, 31-33, 15-13.

“What a great match to start the season,” Harper head coach Gina Lumpkins said. “Fredericksburg is always such a competitive, friendly rivalry. We know their program is always strong, and they challenge us to compete.”

“Somehow we found a way to win,” Roemer said. “There were lots of learning situations and it was good to see how everyone responded.”
