Season opener Monday first test for FHS volleyball
By Matt Ward
With the first two days of the preseason Monday and Tuesday serving as tryouts, there is no roster hanging in the Fredericksburg High School gymnasium for this year’s varsity volleyball team.
In its place hang the words “Better Your Best,” the Billies’ motto for the 2013 season.
“With a relatively young team and players in new roles, we are stressing to them to give their best each day in the gym and simply work to improve each time they walk through the doors of our gym,” head coach Jason Roemer said.
“We will play over 40 matches this year, so if we give our best efforts each night we play and work hard every day in the practice gym to get better than what we were yesterday, we will be successful,” he added.
The first regular season test for Fredericksburg will come Monday when FHS hosts the Harper Longhorns in the annual “Battle of Gillespie County.” Varsity play is set for 7 p.m.
The Billies will see their first game action of the season in a four-way scrimmage Friday in Dripping Springs against Austin Anderson, Dripping Springs and Leander Rouse.
Fredericksburg will then host a four-way scrimmage Saturday against Hondo, Marble Falls and Uvalde.
Competition for spots
Focus this week, Roemer said, has been on defense and serve receive as seven of the 12 varsity players in 2013 are moving up from the JV roster.
