Longhorns look to change luck heading into new season
By Danny Hirt
Following last year’s 1-9 overall record (0-5 in District 14 1-A, Division I), the only way Harper High School can go in 2013 is up.
And that’s what the Longhorns are hoping to do when this season’s campaign kicks off when HHS travels to San Angelo Grape Creek on Friday, Aug. 31.
After dropping a close 30-28 decision to Grape Creek last year, the ’Horns looked as if they were headed to a decent season when they captured a come-from-behind 20-14 victory over Eldorado the next week.
But all hope of a reasonable record crumbled when Harper headed down a rabbit hole in the wake of an eight-game losing streak for the remainder of the year.
But that was last year, and the new season at Harper approaches with guarded optimism for head coach Cody White and his troops.
“It’s got to be better,” White said regarding his team’s chances of turning their recent luck around. But, he added, despite last year’s tough outcome, “the kids are excited,” about the upcoming campaign.
The season kicks off Friday, Aug. 30, when the Longhorns travel to San Angelo for an 8 p.m. contest against Grape Creek.
