Volleyball to open preseason Monday

By Matt Ward —

Sports analysts like to put teams into boxes when predicting how each season is going to go.

There are young teams with raw talent that lack experience and there are old teams, battle-tested and gritty, and then there’s the Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball team.

“Everyone keeps asking me ‘What type of team are you going to have? Are you young? Experienced?’ It’s a mix,” head coach Jason Roemer said.

Roemer and his staff will begin the process of determining exactly what type of team the Billies will be in 2013 on Monday with two days of tryouts for freshmen through varsity players.

Fredericksburg has a strong core of returning talent, led by all-state libero Payton Robertson, all-district middle blocker Allie Doucet and all-district setter Monica Montgomery.

At the same time, Roemer will have to rely on youth for outside scoring with the departure of all-district players Brittani Loth and Trista Hartmann and their 687 combined kills in 2012.

Preseason schedule

Tryouts for the Fredericksburg High School JV and varsity volleyball teams will be held from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., Monday and Tuesday.

Freshmen tryouts will be held from 8-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Weight training for JV and varsity will be held from 3:10-4 p.m. both days.

Regular practice is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 8-11 a.m., and 1-3 p.m.
